LATEST UPDATES

February 21, 2019 – Logan Fontenelle Middle School

Bleacher Replacement: Work will begin later in March 2019 to replace the bleachers in the main gym at Logan Fontenelle with bleacher installation being completed by Heartland Seating Company. The new seating will replace the existing wood bleachers with new retractable contoured plastic bench seats. The installation schedule of the new bleachers is being coordinated with the school administration and should be completed around the first week of April 2019.

Chiller Replacement: Also occurring at Logan Fontenelle will be the replacement of the existing chiller system serving the main cooling system for the building. The existing chiller unit was tentatively scheduled for replacement in roughly 2020, but due to 2 of the 3 compressor units failing in the chiller, the District has expedited the replacement of the chiller rather than expending money for repairs that will be wasted when the unit is replaced. The new chiller unit installation will be occurring during the month of March 2019 and should be completed by April 1st.

Roof Project: The Summer of 2019 will also include the replacement of several roof areas at Logan Fontenelle that were identified as areas in poor condition. The roofing work was recently bid and recommendations will go to the Board in March 2019 for approval. It is anticipated that roof installation will begin in late May 2019 and is scheduled to be completed by August 8th, 2019, which coincides with the start of the 2019-2020 school year.

HVAC System Updates: It is planned that replacement and upgrades in the HVAC system within the building will occur in the Summer of 2020. Plans will be prepared and bids received by the end of 2019 to allow the work to begin in May of 2020.

February 21, 2019 – Mission Middle School

As part of the bond work scheduled in the District, one of the items scheduled for replacement place the existing bleachers in the gym at Mission Middle High School. The new seating will replace the existing wood bleachers with new retractable contoured plastic bench seats. Work on the installation of the new bleachers were completed just prior to the end of the year and are in full use.

The Bellevue School District is looking at completing renovations to the existing track at Mission. The track at the school was omitted from the initial proposed bond work, but in review of existing conditions, it was determined that the condition of the track was actually in worse condition than the other middle school tracks in the District. Engineering plans are currently being prepared to replace the existing asphalt track with a new asphalt track with miscellaneous revisions around the track. Bids will be received in mid-March for consideration by the Board in April 2019.

February 21, 2019 – Bellevue West

As part of the overall bond program, the existing field lighting at Bellevue West was recently upgraded. The existing light fixtures were replaced with new state-of-the-art LED fixtures to bring the light levels on the field up to current recommended standards, but also provides a net utility savings to the District from the use of the lights. The design of the new system was coordinated with Musco Lighting and a contract was awarded to Musco to provide the new lighting system and poles for the project with the installation completed by ProTech Electrical Systems.

Positives resulting from this project include the following:

    • Lamp Life: The existing HID lamps being used at the field are rated around 15,000 hours of average lamp life. The new average LED lamp life expectancy is rated over 50,000 hours.
    • Energy Savings: Based on anticipated yearly use, it is anticipated that the new LED fixtures will save approximately $1,000 per year in utility costs.
    • Musco provides a full 25-year maintenance package for the new LED fixtures with the installation on the new poles. If anything happens to these fixtures during this time, Musco handles all of the repair/replacement work at their expense. This equates to an average $2,000 to $4,000 annual savings to the District in light fixture maintenance costs.

Games at the field for the last half of the football season were held under the new lights and made a significant change in the lighting appearance on the field. The life expectancy of the new lights/poles, the energy efficiency of the new lights, and the reduced maintenance for the fixtures will be an economic savings to the District over the coming years.

Bleachers

With some significant ongoing maintenance issues with the existing gym bleachers at Bellevue West, the bleachers in the main gym at West were replaced in the Fall of 2018 prior to the start of the basketball season.

February 21, 2019 – Peter Sarpy Elementary Life Safety

HVAC Upgrades
Lueder Construction recently completed the life safety, building security and HVAC upgrades At Peter Sarpy Elementary. Life safety and security considerations that were included in the project involved the installation of a fire sprinkler system throughout the building and inclusion of a new security entrance vestibule at the main building entrance. The HVAC renovations within the building involved the complete replacement of the existing HVAC system throughout the building.

The previous building heating and cooling system consists of a steam boiler system and a central chiller unit. After a building analysis, the District decided to move forward to replace the existing HVAC system with a new VRF heating and cooling system. This is a highly energy efficient system that provides individual control in room areas. It is anticipated that the new heating and cooling system will save a considerable amount of utility and maintenance savings over the life of the system. Also included in the building was the replacement of all of the existing lighting to new LED light fixtures. The new lighting will provide a significant cost savings to the District in the reduction of electrical costs. By going with the VRF systems and the LED lighting, the District also was awarded a significant rebate from OPPD for incorporating energy reduction methods in the building.
